Design streets so a mistake need not cost a life

Safety depends on several elements: geometry of intersections, speed, controls, vehicles and rescue.

How the change works

  1. 01 / Public decision

    Speed, junctions and protections

  2. 02 / Physical change

    Less exposure to serious collisions

  3. 03 / Possible outcome

    Pedestrian and cyclist safety

Safety depends on several elements: geometry of intersections, speed, controls, vehicles and rescue.

What the evidence tells us

Helsinki recorded no deaths among pedestrians in 2019, amid a decades-long decline in road fatalities.

Conditions and limits

That year, however, three people died in traffic. A year at zero does not guarantee permanent security nor does it measure a climate benefit.

Other possible benefits

More autonomy and confidence in daily travel.

Review of the relationship between speed and safety. It supports the mechanism, it does not prove that the local data depends on a single measure.
